Art Shanks Celebration of Life Donation to Cypress Mandela Training Center
If you have found this page, you are aware of the amazing life work my father has accomplished. My father was heavily dedicated to improving our communites and serving the underprivilaged. He served well by ensuring Cypress Mandela Training Center was a place that all could come and have the opportunity to have a great life. I have spent my entire life watching him work so hard to keep this facility open for our community. It was his wish that we keep this amazing center open and make it truly thrive. Please donate to this amazing facility and cause. Please keep in mind you can make physical donations to the center directly at 977 66th Ave. 94621. Donations can be made in cash, card, or check. If donating via check, checks should be payable to Cypress Mandela Training Center. Thank you in advance for your support!
Below you will find Arthur Shanks II Obituary.
Arthur Shanks II was born on October 26, 1955, to Arthur Shanks I (deceased) and Dorothy Shanks. He was raised in Oakland, California along with his four brothers and two sisters. Arthur had three children with Shirley and one child with his current wife, Linda Shanks, and two grandchildren. Arthur valued learning and education demonstrated by his completion of higher education and the sacrifices he made for his family. He completed the cement masons apprenticeship program in 1981, earned his A.S. from Merritt College in 1976, B.A. from California State University Hayward in 1985, California Community Colleges Limited-Service Credential for Biology/Math and Cement Masonry in 1984 and 1987, respectively. He also received numerous construction industry-related certificates.
Learning and education were also ingrained in his life passion as the Executive director of the Cypress Mandela Training Center for 26+ years. The Cypress Mandela Training Center is a pre-apprenticeship program for the trades that places the underprivileged and underrepresented into meaningful jobs so that they may positively maneuver in society. As the founder of Cypress Mandela, it was his duty to ensure that these students were given the best opportunities he and his staff could provide. An essential part of this training was life skills. He believed that life skills training was equally as important as the trades training. Teaching these skills to the students was very important because many of them were never taught these skills and came from a disadvantaged background.
Arthur was the recipient of numerous awards and was recognized for his work in the community. He was featured on many news broadcasts and in many written publications. He was not a believer of mediocrity or status quo and he confronted challenges with courage, determination, perseverance, and consistency. While he had a heart of compassion, he was not afraid to speak his mind and at times it was his way or the highway.
On December 29, 2019, we lost a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend, and mentor. Heaven gained a precious angel. He will be missed but never forgotten. Arthur Shanks II will be with us every day, not only in our memories but in our hearts.
